Creating Awareness
Foster Care Awareness
In My Shoes is committed to bringing a voice to the community of our brothers and sisters currently in and from the foster care system. It is important for us to reduce the stigma that comes with being raised in foster care. As an organization we do this in a few ways, one is by educating people on what the foster care system is while sharing what it feels like to be raised in it. We believe through educating the public about foster care, we can assist in reducing the stigmas that are stamped on youth. Our hope is to help youth realize and reach their greatest potential on their journey towards adulthood.
On any given day, there are a half-of-million children and youth living in foster care in the United States. Out of those, there are over 9,000 in Arizona and 2,400 of the children and youth live in Pima County. There are over 12 million alumni of the foster care system. All of our In My Shoes Mentors and Club Facilitators are part of that alumni family.
In My Shoes is committed to empowering young people in foster care by providing trainings and guidance which gives youth the necessary tools to strengthen their voices.
In My Shoes has been training other child welfare professionals, community members, state and national legislative representatives, networks, as well as other allies since its conception. In May of 2008 we began our first annual Public Awareness Campaign.
